Stuffer first, Goggia third, Schnarf fifth: tomorrow the race starts at 10.30 am. Vonn falls: no harm done
The second timed training session of the ladies’ Downhill in Cortina d'Ampezzo showcased the best of Matteo Guadagnini’s Italian talent, who all posted outstanding times. First was Verena Stuffer from Val Gardena, who clocked a time of 1'37”61, just 5 hundredths of a second ahead of the Swiss Lara Gut, once again at the top of the rankings. Third place belonged to Sofia Goggia, 34 hundredths behind her team mate. Next was Ilka Stuhec, the Slovenian athlete who is on top form this season (four victories to her name), who arrived 52 hundredths after Stuffer. Johanna Schnarf, another member of the Italian team, took fifth place with just 0.62 seconds separating her from the winner.
Elena Curtoni was also up there with the top athletes, coming in 13th, and Federica Brignone arrived 15th.
The crowd held its breath when Lindsey Vonn fell at the Curva Delta turn. The American star went wide and slid into the safety fencing. She sustained no injuries, getting up immediately and skiing down to the finish line.
Elena Fanchini slipped at the same spot, but the athlete from Brescia also got up unharmed.
Saturday is race day, with the start scheduled for 10.30 am. The weather conditions are excellent, with bright sunshine forecast. The course is in perfect conditions and all the athletes have expressed their happiness at competing once again on the Olympia delle Tofane. Tomorrow’s race will be the 95th to be held in Cortina as part of the Alpine Ski World Cup; no other venue in Italy has hosted more World Cup competitions.
QUOTES
Verena Stuffer: “I had a good day today, I like the conditions of the course, they are very favourable. Maybe I was slightly more hesitant than in the first training session, but I think we all were a bit. Now we have to focus on the race”.
Ilka Stuhec: “I’m in sync with this course, the conditions on this second run were great and I had fun. But this was just another training session, it’s all down to tomorrow’s race”.
