The twenty-seventh Ladies’ Ski World Cup in Cortina d'Ampezzo kicks off with an extra vote of confidence for the resort, just like last year. Following the cancellation of the women’s competitions scheduled for this weekend in St. Anton (Austria) due to heavy snowfall, the International Ski Federation (FIS) has asked Fondazione Cortina 2021 if it can make up the downhill race on Friday, adding an extra race to the Cortina schedule. With the conditions on Olympia declared excellent and the logistics of organising such a busy week for the athletes feasible, Cortina has agreed to the International Federation’s request and has inserted the extra downhill race into the official competition schedule.

The new schedule now stands as follows: two timed training sessions on Thursday 17, the first downhill on Friday 18, the second on Saturday 19 and the super G to round off the competition on Sunday 20.

One of the many highlights of this year’s competition in Cortina is the return of the American superstar Lindsey Vonn, who had already announced on her Instagram profile that she was ready for the Austrian races. Now she is sure to release all her power on the new-look Olympia delle Tofane course which has already given her 12 wins (6 downhills and 6 super Gs) and which this year now provides her with three opportunities to get even closer to the record of 86 podium wins held by Ingemar Stenmark. The 34-year-old champion has her sights firmly fixed on beating this record, with her victories currently standing at 82, as soon as she possibly can.

It will not be plain sailing for Vonn, however, given the fierce competition she is up against, with the Slovenian Ilka Stuhec and the athletes Nicole Schmidhofer and Cornelia Huetter just to name a few. There is still a question mark over the participation of the Olympic downhill champion, Sofia Goggia, who has just got back on her skis but is unlikely to be ready for the races on Olympia, which last year gave her victory and paved the way for her Olympic gold in PyeongChang.
