Olympia delle Tofane - Cortina d'Ampezzo

Races and events scheduled for 19 and 20 January

The journey to the Alpine World Ski Championships 2021 continues

Date: 28/12/2018 from 1800
Place: Cortina d'Ampezzo

One of the most eagerly awaited events of the White Circus is nearly here: the Ladies’ Alpine Ski World Cup, which is held in Cortina against the stunning backdrop of the Ampezzo Dolomites. After two days of training runs, the competition begins on Saturday 19 with the downhill, followed by the super G on Sunday 20. This important event marks a key stage on the road to the Alpine World Ski Championships 2021 and is further endorsement of the exceptional organisational skills of the Italians and the ability of the locals to come together to produce such a successful event.

This year is the thirtieth Ladies’ World Cup on Olympia and the latest in 27 consecutive years, and has many exciting events in store for visitors. The top Italian and international athletes will inaugurate the Rumerlo finish area, which has been prepared for the upcoming 2021 World Championships; it includes a stunning terrace overlooking the Ampezzo valley that affords breathtaking views of Cortina town centre and helps make the World Cup more spectator-friendly.

And when visitors are not watching the skiing, they can enjoy some of the many events guaranteed to make this World Cup truly memorable: a variety of side events have been organised to involve the public and make the competition a success. Everything kicks off on Saturday 19 at the end of the downhill competition: the post-race celebrations will include the inauguration of the new finish area at Rumerlo, with the Après Ski World Cup rocking to the sounds of DJ Max Benzoni for the radio station RDS.

On Saturday evening, the exclusive Cortina 2021 Dinner Night will be held at Lago Ghedina, a glamorous party and dinner organised in true Cortina 2021 style; the meal will be prepared by the chefs of the famous restaurants SanBrite and Tivoli, while the drinks will be served by the top barmen of Molo Cortina and La Cave Cortina. They will also be unveiling the Cortina 2021 Cocktail, which has been specially created for the occasion and will feature at all the events leading up to the 2021 World Championships in Cortina. Guests will be entertained with music from an RDS DJ and a light show and photo booth will provide the finishing touch to the fabulous party. For info and bookings: eventi@cortina2021.com.

This year’s World Cup promises to be even more memorable thanks to the refurbished Audi Cortina Lounge, the VIP tent which has been made even more welcoming for guests who want to experience the thrill of the World Cup in a dynamic location, while enjoying the panoramic terrace with its view over the slopes and the valley. Guests at this unique venue will also enjoy a fine dining experience, provided by the top restaurants in Cortina and their chefs. Lattebusche products and sparkling wine from the Consorzio di Tutela del Prosecco Doc will also be served at cocktail hour in the Audi Cortina Lounge.

This year’s World Cup is a great opportunity for the Fondazione Cortina 2021 to test its new sustainable mobility concept, which it has developed exclusively for the forthcoming World Championships. The aim is to prevent congestion on the town’s ring road and ensure maximum mobility for the general public, providing shuttle buses which will connect the new park and ride car parks, the Rumerlo finish area and the key event venues. For anyone wanting to travel to Cortina on public transport, the contract with Dolomitibus has been renewed, and it will be running fan buses from Feltre to Cortina on Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 January. Info and tickets: www.musement.com. From 5 January visitors will also be able to purchase the bus + World Cup ticket package using the Nugo app.

The slopes may be the main attraction, but the town centre of the Queen of the Dolomites will also have its fair share of excitement during the event: on Friday 19 January at 6.00 pm the official opening of the World Cup and the draw for the downhill bibs will take place in Piazza Dibona, and the exhibition “Cortina 1956 in Small Scale” by photographer Arturo Delle Donne will be hosted in several different venues around the town. Lastly, the main thoroughfare Corso Italia will be the perfect place for athletes, tourists and fans to mingle, with words and music provided by the radio station RDS.

The newcomer to this year’s event is the Cortina 2021 Lounge, located near Piazza Angelo Dibona, which will host the athletes and be RDS’s base. The first floor of the Lounge will also provide an exclusive space for Cortina 2021 partners: Audi, Enel, Tecnica Group, Leitner, DSS and Adecco.

To access the public areas on the slopes and watch the races, visitors must purchase a ticket: 12 euro for the finish area and 25 euro for the Fans’ Tribune (special rates for FISI members and other promotions). Tickets can be bought online, at the two ticket points in Gilardon and in the finish area which will be open on race days. For more information, please contact tickets@cortina2021.com.
