Olympia delle Tofane - Cortina d'Ampezzo

Lara Gut, the third queen

The Swiss champion secures the 24th success of her career and claims victory on Olympia after a year away from the podium

Date: 21/01/2018 from 1515
Place: Cortina d'Ampezzo

Error for Goggia who goes out, Vonn takes sixth place. Only a torn collateral ligament for the Austrian Nadine Fest.

Three races, three "queens". The third race on Oympia delle Tofane ended with victory for Lara Gut in the Super G.  The Swiss champion concluded three amazing days of skiing after victory for Sofia Goggia in the first downhill race and Lindsey Vonn in the second. But it was yet another day to remember for Italian alpine skiing.

Johanna Schnarf, the 33-year-old athlete from Valdaora, clinched the second podium of her career after victory eight years ago in the downhill in Crans Montana, Switzerland, behind Lindsey Vonn. It was another second place for the Italian today who started with bib number 1 and fearlessly charged down Olympia delle Tofane. Schnarf was beaten by Lara Gut by only 14 hundredths. The Swiss athlete won the 24th World Cup race of her career, earning the success which had eluded her since last year on Olympia. Third place on the podium went to Nicole Schmidhofer, who finished 27 hundredths behind the winner. With a time of 1:15.15, Lindsey Vonn earned herself a place in the top ten, coming sixth.

Due to strong winds in the upper part of the course, the starting gate of the Super G was moved to its second position at the Duca d'Aosta jump, and then the race was interrupted after competitor number 44. The competition was therefore valid.

As for the Italian team, Marta Bassino finished 20th with a time of 1:16.44. The athlete from Piemonte skied particularly well in the first part of Olympia, where her delay was minimal.  Nadia Fanchini came 24th, while Laura Pirovano, Nicol Delago and Anna Hofer did not reach the finish line. Sofia Goggia, who also ended up off the track, had already jeopardized her chances with an error at the starting gate. Federica Brignone did not compete as she was running a temperature.

The Austrian, Nadine Fest, had a nasty fall and tore her left collateral ligament without breaking it.

This race concluded the 29th Ladies’ World Cup in Cortina: the competition was made even more memorable by the victories of three great champions, proving once again that the Cortina course is a course for "queens".

This is what the top athletes had to say:

Lara Gut: “I am delighted to be back on the podium here, in Cortina, where I celebrated my last victory. I’ve been through a tough time, but everything is forgotten today. My victory gives me greater confidence and peace of mind to face the next races".

Johanna Schnarf: “This podium is a real liberation for me because I’d been so close for such a long time now. Today I gave that extra little push and it did the trick. I’m really happy because it’s the home race, on a brilliant course, and my friends and relatives are all here to see me. Now I can tackle the next races with a lighter heart".
