Bebe Vio in Cortina

She will meet the Queens of Speed

Date: 25/01/2017 from 1300
Place: Cortina d'Ampezzo

The Paralympic and World fencing champion, one of sport’s personalities of the year 2016, will be in Cortina for the Ladies’ Alpine Ski World Cup on 28 and 29 January. This weekend at the foot of the Dolomites marks the debut of Fondazione Cortina 2021 as it organises its first event in preparation for the World Ski Championships in four years

Cortina d’Ampezzo, 25 January 2017 - Bebe Vio is one of the most extraordinary personalities in the world of sport who came to the fore in 2016. The memory of her uncontrollable joy, which she literally shouted to the world after the final thrust that gave her the Paralympic fencing title at Rio 2016, has gone down in history. On Sunday 29 January, she will be in the finish area of the Olympia course at the foot of the Tofane mountains to cheer on the Italian athletes and the other young downhill champions competing in the two races at the Ladies’ Alpine Ski World Cup.

“I’m thrilled to have been invited to the Ladies’ Alpine Ski World Cup competition in Cortina”, said Bebe Vio, adding: “I adore this resort and love coming here whenever I can. My only regret is that I’ve never skied here, but I hope to realise this dream soon, thanks to my friends in Cortina”.

With the Downhill and the Super G, the weekend will be packed with thrills, entertainment and a touch of glamour, as VIPs and highly prestigious partners all flock to the Ampezzo valley. They will be joined by the Italian media, leading international journalists and the top female athletes in the world who will battle it out on the Olympia delle Tofane course to earn themselves a place in the World Ski Championships in St. Moritz this February.

This double event has particular resonance for the Dolomite resort as it is the first event organised by the Fondazione Cortina 2021, which is making its debut in the “White Circus” with its focus very much on the 2021 World Ski Championships.

This World Cup weekend will therefore be a real test event for the premiere competition scheduled to take place in the resort in four years’ time. The Foundation has embarked on this journey and intends to learn from past experiences, involve all local and regional resources and introduce a number of best practices that have featured in major events recently in Italy and around the world, in particular the issue of sustainability.

The two World Cup races will be broadcast live on Rai Sport and Eurosport and will enjoy a busy programme of side events.

This year there will be a new look to the top events, starting with the public bib draw and the award ceremony. The first one will take place in piazza Angelo Dibona on Friday 27 at 6.00 pm with the chance to see the top downhill skiers receive their bibs with their start numbers for the Downhill the next day. Next up will be the presentation of the new Cortina 2021 logo and the Italian team’s new race suits for the upcoming World Ski Championships in St. Moritz, against a spectacular backdrop featuring a stunning lightshow. There will be DJs, entertainment, and even an area for tourists, residents and fans alike to get autographs signed. And to finish the night in grand style, there will also be a number of events in the bars and clubs around the town.

On Saturday 28 the spotlight will be on piazza Dibona again from the early afternoon onwards, with the award ceremony at 6.00 pm and the second bib draw for the Super G on Sunday 29. It will give the public another chance to meet some of the international skiing stars: like the American Lindsey Vonn, who will be competing in her beloved Cortina and looking to improve her performance in the speed disciplines after her success in the Downhill in Garmisch Partenkirchen, in preparation for the world championship competition in St. Moritz. Then there will be the Italian team with a number of budding champions in the speed races this year, including Sofia Goggia (7 podiums already this season) and Elena Curtoni in the Super G in Val d’Isère. The team is poised to take home a host of prestigious results also with Federica Brignone (who took the top spot on the podium Tuesday in the Giant Slalom in Plan de Corones), Marta Bassino, and the other members of the team.
