In 2017, as announced by FIS during the Autumn Meetings in Zurich, Cortina d'Ampezzo will host the giant slalom race too. It'll be the perfect time for Karen Putzer to celebrate the tenth anniversary of her victory on the Olympia delle Tofane track.
"Cortina, my Cortina! The OlympiadelleTofane holds a special place in my memories: here I made my debut in my first race of the World Cup when I was sixteen, here I won my first superG and here I won the last victory in giant slalom in 2007 reaching four podiums and matching my victories in superG. Just this victory in giant slalom is, from an emotional standpoint, the most important one for me: in fact I returned after a hip operation and I had no guarantees of returning to sports or to return to compete, nor to win. It had also to qualify for the World Championship. Winning, in Cortina, in the longest race of the season on such a beautiful track was definitely one of the golden moments of my career. The Olympia delle Tofane is one of the most difficult tracks for female giant slalom, where you have to be physically at the top to win. The characteristics of the track, from start to finish, are so varied that you have to be ready for anything. Despite the lack of visibility for low clouds that day I did it and I still smile when I think of that round! Just as I like to remember my afternoons after the races: I always went skiing in open field so I liked the spectacular slopes of Cortina. This for me was, and still is, real skiing, that is the idea of being in the middle of the mountains. Every year I come back to watch the races of the World Cup and I certainly shall not miss the upcoming editions: in 2017 we will see a great event! "
..and if this is said by Karen Putzer we believe it!
