As announced during the FIS Autumn Meeting in Zurigo, in 2017 Cortina d'Ampezzo will host the giant slalom too. So there'll be three races on the Olympia delle Tofane slope: downhill, superG and giant slalom. This is a confirmation of the Cortina Ski World Cup Organizing Committee efforts and the public is excited as the athletes. The first one to be really satisfied is Deborah Compagnoni, who won the Cortina giant slalom in 1997.
"Almost twenty years have passed since my victory in Cortina, in 1997, after years of chasing after that podium: win in your country is already a very great emotion, do it with the giant slalom of the Olympia delle Tofane it was even more. The giant slalom in Cortina is a race where the athletes must make the difference to be able to win: the slope itself, the ice, the bumps and the changes of visibility require a great technical interpretation. Not to forget the last part where it’s the time to make the difference: slightly easier than the rest of the track, this is where you have to maintain a good timing and not everyone can do it. The assignment of the giant to Cortina is a confirmation of the Organizing Committee great efforts and of the value of the track. In 2017 we will see a great show, with three days of high level adrenaline.”
The history says the second italian winner was Karen Putzer in 2007 while the Finnish Tanja Poutiainen won the last edition in 2010.
Who will be the next Queen of the Olympia delle Tofane's giant slalom?
