CORTINA D’AMPEZZO JANUARY 25th 2014 - Tina Maze won everywhere and every kind of race. Overall in the last season, when she celebrated in the World Cup the record of 2414 points, podiums (24) and successes (11) among which the last in 2013 in the downhill of Garmisch. In her carrier she won in St. Moritz, Lenzerheide, Courchevel, Aspen, Are, Maribor, Soelden (three times), Santa Caterina Valfurva, Ofterschwang in Germany, St. Anton e also in Tarvisio in the super combined of 2011. But never on the Olimpia delle Tofane. Actually she went close enough before: in the last winter, in fact, she ranked second in Cortina’s race.
Today finally she won, with bib number 19 and an amazing sun in the eyes. She couldn’t do better, she did a mistake-free run and showed her talent also approaching the last jump. At the arrival she celebrated throwing her fists to the sky and then she made herself comfortable in the leader’s corner. She put on a Tyrolean hat that exalted her joyful look, and also put on fancy earrings pretending not to follow the race of the German champion who defeated her many times this year as Lindsey Vonn in the past.
Extraordinarily this time Maria Riesch made more than one mistake, not reaching indeed the podium: fourth, but smiling anyway. In the general World Cup ranking she has more than a thousand points and tomorrow she’s again the favourite number one.
On the other side Tina Maze hadn’t won since the last race of the past season. But also in skiing no one is undefeatable. What happened this season to the thirty-year old Slovenian will probably remain a mystery also to his manager real-life mate Andrea Massi who went hugging her strongly once she crossed the finish line.
Tina Weirather clinches a great victory and goes on the second step of the podium after having pushed hard to see how fast she could go. The third placing was assigned to Marianne Kaufmann-Abderhalden, the Swiss that triumphed this year in Val d’Isère impressing the whole world press for her long name and for her amazing performance as well.
